Aims

The goal of the Livingstone Tanzania Trust is to alleviate poverty in the communities around Babati, Tanzania.

We aim to do this by:-

  • Supporting the physical development of primary and secondary schools
  • Supporting the development of the skills, knowledge and resources of the teaching staff
  • Supporting participatory and inclusive community based development programmes
  • Supporting the development of small businesses
  • Supporting the personal development of young people within the community
  • Promoting peace and understanding between different cultural groups
  • Demonstrating sustainable alternative farming and lifestyle techniques

Our objectives whilst achieving the aims are to

  • Ensure that 85% of paid LTT employees are native to Tanzania
  • 75% of turnover is spent in Tanzania
  • Link with suitable ethical service providers to deliver the above services
  • To provide equal opportunities regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, sexuality, religion and HIV status
  • To have open bookkeeping and transparent systems of work.
  • Follow the Tanzanian rural Integration project guidelines. This is a bottom up approach that is more likely to address the real rather than perceived needs of the community and thus is the best forum for resolving problems prioritised by the community
  • Ensure that all projects have both community and LTT financial backing
  • Promote and participate in adding local value to the supply chain where possible.
  • Ensure that our operations work in close harmony with the people to provide benefits for today and safe guard the opportunities of future generations and seek to minimise any negative impact on the ecology of Tanzania that our work might have.

Responsible Tourism

LTT believe that Responsible Tourism is tourism that should:

  • minimize negative economic, environmental and social impacts
  • generate greater economic benefits for local people and enhances the well being of host communities; improves working conditions and access to the industry
  • involve local people in decisions that affect their lives and life chances
  • make positive contributions to the conservation of natural and cultural heritage embracing diversity
  • provide more enjoyable experiences for tourists through more meaningful connections with local people, and a greater understanding of local cultural, social and environmental issues
  • provide access for physically challenged people
  • be culturally sensitive, encourages respect between tourists and hosts, and builds local pride and confidence.
  • LTT recognizes this definition and seeks to always ensure its operations can be defined as Responsible Tourism as defined above
