Farm animals

Marcel and his herd

Animals are essentail part of any farm, and our farm is no different. The animals are there as a source of money, to make more little animals and to provide milk, eggs etc. The manure is not only vital for spreading on the fileds and improving the quality of the soil, but when we are ready it will also line the fish ponds and provide much needed nutrients to the fish.

We would very much like to thank Sean Scahill, from OWM in London, for starting the ball rolling and donating our very first head of cattle. Your beatiful donation has now been joined by two others and so we are half way to filling the pen. We now need a bull for obvious reasons.

Marcel and Eve

We were delighted to welcome billy back to the farm. Billy was gifted to Clive from the Waangwaray Community to thank him for his kindness. Billy was intended to be eaten for lunch that day, but being city boys, we could not see that happen and billy has the job of fathering any many Jean's as we can find!

Joining Billy though is Eve, a Tottenburg dairy goat of very high quality whose milk we want to use to make cheese. Th idea is that we can breed Tottenburg goats and then sell them to the community or to other communities and we can become a Tottenburg goat breeding centre. Tottenburgs are the best variety of goat for producing milk in this environment and so are to be considered as walking income generating schemes. As the project becomes more successful we will train a member of the community in animal husbandry and he or she can then provide that service to the whole community and thus earn themselves a living.

The breeding plans seemed to start far faster than i thought we would because Eve was pregnant when we bought her, and now we have two little she goats, both nameless. If you want to name a goat (nothing unsuitable), then please contact me on julian@livingstonetanzaniatrust.com . Name the goat after yourself, your girlfriend, mother in-law or ex-wife, the choice is yours, the highest two pledges win the day! We are just delighted to have two more in the fold
There ain't nobody here but us chickens
We have 10 chickens and a cockerel, and their eggs will be sold to the local community and to the volunteers when they come to work with us, so this will be a constant source of income for the farm. we will of course let some eggs grow into new chickens and they can be for market or lunch. This is a harsh reality and I for one will not be eating chicken. The chickens have shelves at different height in their coop so that they can admire the views, and when we go out next, we will take a few toys for them to play with. This ought to keep Jamie Oliver et al off our backs!
