Time to look, listen and learn |
With HIV/AIDS being one of the most serious health concerns facing the community we decided to tackle this first.
In partnership with GIYEDO (the Grassroots Initiative for Youth and Elderly Development Organisation) and after discussions with Babati Town Council and community leaders we designed a community awareness program detailing how HIV/AIDS is contracted and measures needed to be taken to prevent it and other sexually transmitted diseases from spreading. We highlighted the need to banish the stigma attached to HIV/AIDS sufferers and encourage more people to get tested.
At Easter we ran a 4-day intensive training course for 4 members of the community and all the Waangwaray Teachers so that they can be fully aware of HIV/AIDS (as teachers are in the high risk category) and have the knowledge to teach the students without teh feeling of embarrassment.
