Tree climbing lions |
Sitting at the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment, this fantastic lake is home to 3,000,000 flamingos giving the lake a pink tint when seen from a far. The park boasts fantastic birdlife, hippos, elephants, giraffe, and numerous different types of deer as well as the rarely seen tree-climbing lions. The park is also a UNESCO World Biosphere reserve. The variety of different landscapes means that one minute you might be in dense forests eagerly looking out for hidden giraffe and next in the open plains next to the lake watching solitary bull elephants against the backdrop of the distant, shimmering mini volcanoes that litter the plains to the south.
The park gate is located at the bustling town of Mto Wa Mbu where we arrange accommodation in a locally owned guest house and we eat in locally owned restaurant. However if luxury is what you are after there are a variety of fantastic lodges close by.
