Reading Competition

As soon as the Livingstone Tanzania Trust completed the library at the Waangwaray Primary School in 2009 we started the Reading Competition.

In the past the students never had access to reading books and barely had access to text books. By proving easy reading fun fictional books we can encourage the students to read for pleasure. It is through this type of reading that students learn and it can further stimulate their desire to learn. Our library also has encyclopaedia from which the students can learn so much more. This used to be locked away but now it takes pride of place.

The Reading Competition is about reading out loud in front of your friends. To me this used to be the scariest thing ever, but the more you do it the more confidence you get in yourself.

Every month we hold a class competition whereby the best in the class gets a pen and the student who makes the most progress also wins a pen.

This competition costs just £500 a year per school and makes a huge difference to all of the 400 students in the class (£1.25p per student). We are looking for sponsorship of this project. CAN YOU HELP??

In 2011 three other schools recognised how inspirational this programme was and asked to join in the competition. We were delighted, this type of organic growth is exactly what we had hoped would happen.
