Sinai Primary School Market Garden

With the provision of water the school transformed its small ornamental garden into a thriving income generating market garden. Under the guidance of MCDO's agriculturalist the garden continues to evolve, growing produce to meet the local needs. This includes sweet potatoes, Chinese leaf, Mchiha, Sukomaweki, tomatoes. Passion vines climb the existing trees and mango, avocado and pawpaw have been planted as well. The farm is managed by the teachers and Year 6 students participate in its development as a practical agricultural lesson, taking the lessons home.

A second market garden has been established and is run by the students who benefit from the Hardship fund and receive free school meals. The crops grown are sold and the money used to contribute to their meals and so reduce the dependence on external funding.
