Safari

Safari is a Swahili word meaning “journey”, but it has become synonymous with adventure, wildlife and exposure to nature at its rawest. These days it is hardly man against the elements with 4×4 cars and luxury accommodation, but somehow that doesn’t take away from the majesty of seeing all these fantastic animals in their natural habitat. Life is still raw here with animals continually fighting to survive. All the delicate balances and checks of nature are on display to remind us of the splendours of the natural world.

We are not a safari company and we can only advise you and put you in touch with local contractors.

  • Rickshaw Travel are a reliable organisation that we have been using for many years now
  • Safari Makers have also provided a good service
  • Moyo Africa Explorations Limited can combine safari with cultural packages outside our region
  • Fair Travel are a locally run highly ethical safari company who use their profits to support local community projects. They can arrange climbs up Kilimanjaro as well.

You must book and pay for your safari directly the safari company of your choice.

What to see??

Lake Manyara

Sitting at the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment, this fantastic lake is home to 3,000,000 flamingos giving the lake a pink tint when seen from a far. The park boasts fantastic birdlife, hippos, elephants, giraffe, and numerous different types of deer as well as the rarely seen tree-climbing lions. The park is also a UNESCO World Biosphere reserve. The variety of different landscapes means that one minute you might be in dense forests eagerly looking out for hidden giraffe and next in the open plains next to the lake watching solitary bull elephants against the backdrop of the distant, shimmering mini volcanoes that litter the plains to the south.

The park gate is located at the bustling town of Mto Wa Mbu where we arrange accommodation in a locally owned guest house and we eat in locally owned restaurant. However, if luxury is what you are after there are a variety of fantastic lodges close by. This is good for a half day safari

Tarangire National Park

Tarangire is home to a vast array of Baobab (or upside down) trees of phenomenal size which stud the landscape. These trees’ circumferences can grow up to 30 ft after a century and most trees live to be 600 years old.

This National Park is home to great herds of Elephants which wander the grasslands and flat topped acacia forests. The Tarangire River runs through the middle of the park providing a green corridor down to the shallow Lake Burunge in the West home to a flock of Pink Flamingos

Serengeti

The hard ground shakes as the migrating wildebeest (over 1 million of them) charge this way and that, weaving their way across the great Serengeti plains following the rains and the new grass. From December to May they find home in the east, towards the Ngorongoro Crater; where with food a plenty they give birth to the next generation. As the land dries at the end of the long rains the migration starts in a westerly direction towards Lake Victoria, where the rains tend to last longer. Only by constantly seeking new pastures can the great herds survive. In July the rains move north, generated by the rift valley wall and the migration follows up to the Maasai Mara Game Reserve in Kenya. As the rains return in December to the Ngorongoro area the migration loop is completed – The great circle of life.

The vast plains, huge skies are only interrupted the solitary acacia trees and the kopjes. The scenery is simply breathtaking.

The Ngorongoro Crater

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) is a conservation area a UNESCO World Heritage site situated 180Â km (112 miles) west of Arusha. The famous crater is approximately 22 km across and home to over 20,000 large animals along with the highest density of Africa’s predators. It is also home to some fantastic lodges and a high density of safari cars. It is a stunningly beautiful location and on occasions you can see, first thing in the morning the clouds falling like a water fall into the crater from the rim, quite breathtaking.
