Volunteering in Tz

The Livingstone Tanzania Trust is NOT a volunteer organisation, we are a grass roots development charity. Volunteering with us is always an adventure and hugely rewarding. Our projects are based on the needs of the community, some started by the community and some by us, all designed to educate and facilitate the alleviation of poverty.

Whilst the challenge of volunteering is the  work that we ask of you, part of the challenge is living in a foreign land, with strange people, eating different food, being outside your comfort zone. That is also part of the fun, challenging yourself to do and experience new things, achieving the project goals sit alongside your own personal goals which is why the whole thing is so rewarding. The more you put into your time with us the more you can expect to get back from it. Volunteering is not for everyone. But those who do it will cherish the memory for the rest of their lives. It not only refreshes the parts that holidays cannot reach, it puts your own life into perspective.

Volunteering in developing countries is not like volunteering in the UK. Developing counties have ample unemployed people with no skills who can help build a school. What is missing is the funds to build the schools, pay for the builders, pay for the cement, the metal sheets and the wood etc. So without wishing to be mercenary your biggest contribution to the community is the funds that you bring, because that is what enables the development to take place and this is how we get your donation directly to the grassroots level. But the difference between a donor and a volunteer is that the volunteer wants to play an active role in spending the money. We very much welcome that because the second most important contribution that you can make is to meet the community and build your own relationship with them. A chance for you to meet each other as people, as equals, human to human, mixing socially, working together and eating the same food. The importance of this aspect of the trip cannot be underestimated.

So what makes us different?

  1. We are a small, effective grassroots organisation who are success not profit orientated.
  2. You can see exactly where your money is being spent and the value that it is adding to our work.
  3. Our volunteers work alongside and learn from our local builders, not instead of them.
  4. We don’t cut costs by cutting corners on health and safety. We conduct regular health and safety risk assessments and have regular toolbox talks, outlining the tasks, the hazards and how we prevent ourselves from injuring ourselves and each other. It is however your responsibility to ensure that you comply with the training and advice.
  5. The work that our volunteers do is part of our long term strategy for the school and the community and is designed to play a part in our poverty alleviation strategy.
  6. We have a volunteer charter to help us manage expectations.
  7. Because we have so many things going on we can offer you a wide variety of jobs to reduce any repetition of work and keep you stimulated
